Young seeks to best McDermott, Sceniak in race for U.S. Senate – Chicago Tribune

Starkly different visions of what the future will hold are playing out in Indiana’s race for U.S. Senate between the two-term incumbent Republican U.S. Sen. Todd Young and his two challengers, Democrat Thomas McDermott and Libertarian James Sceniak.

Young, R-Bloomington, is seeking his third term as senator, laying blame for inflation and high gas prices, and illegal immigration at the feet of Democrats and President Joe Biden.

Challenger Thomas McDermott, a Democrat and mayor of the city of Hammond, says the election is about women and restoring their rights to privacy and healthcare choice, which was stripped away when the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.

McDermott said Young has had his chance for 12 years and has done nothing to address the issues on which he is campaigning, only adding $16 trillion to the national debt, which helped to fuel inflation, and failing to act on any sort of comprehensive immigration reform.

Libertarian Challenger James Sceniak said he supports a woman’s right to choose, and there is plenty of blame to spread around regarding the causes of inflation.

Sceniak said the issue of abortion rights has divided the nation and “politicians should not act as physicians.” He said steps can be taken to reduce abortion despite any law that would legalize it.
