WYTHEVILLE, Va. (WFXR) — Two different online scams trick two people into paying thousands of dollars over the week.
Wytheville Police Department posted on Facebook as a warning to people to be aware of scams that are circulating.
Police say the first scam involves a Sweepstakes prize with the winner taking home $20 million. However, the person — who police say didn’t believe they were being scammed — paid scammers more than $200,000 for “Taxes and Processing Fees.”
The police department also talked about a second scam involving a romance scam. According to police, the person sent more than $30,000 to help rescue the scammer from several situations as part of a “Stranded oil rig worker in Nigeria”.
These situations included medical emergencies, fleeing the country, and bombing on the oil rig. In each situation, the scammer requested more money, according to the department.
