Unless you have been living in a prairie dog den for the past few months, you have heard of the new Republican Congressman from New York’s Nassau County, George Santos. A man who has famously lied about every aspect of his life, education, accomplishments, family, religion, and perhaps, even his name. He’s even on the lam for admitted check fraud in Brazil.
However, despite having falsely claimed that his family escaped the Holocaust, that his mother perished after 9/11, and that he was Jewish, he subsequently stated that such lies were mere “embellishments”. Saying that you speak fluent French when all you can do is read the wine label may be an embellishment. Purposefully misstating your religion and family background as it relates to one of history’s greatest horrors is contemptible.
This phony got away with it for a time because there wasn’t the kind of journalistic fact-checking that normally occurs. The lack of local newspapers, which would take a great interest in a Congressional candidate’s background, was key. Therefore, it took a belated inquiry by the New York Times to ferret out Santos’ true beginnings – unfortunately, after Santos was elected.
Now caught with his trousers fully dropped, one would expect that Santos would demonstrate some modicum of remorse or shame, characteristics largely absent in right wing Republicans. But, Santos is defiant and stated that…
