Whatcom Sheriff and local credit union issue separate scam alerts

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office and a local credit union are warning residents of scams.

WECU says some members say they’ve received text messages claiming to be from the credit union.

The attacks, called “smishing,” direct recipients to malicious websites where they are prompted to enter personal and banking information.

The websites may use the institution’s logo and other information to look credible, but members are warned to never respond to unexpected text messages,

And the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office says they’ve received reports of people getting calls claiming to be from department officers.

The callers demand payment in gift or prepaid debit cards to resolve warrants and should be ignored.
