Urgent warning issued to BT customers to watch out for new email scam that could drain bank account in seconds

BT customers have been warned to watch out for a new email scam which may give criminals access to their bank details. The convincing scam reportedly uses legitimate-appearing links to BT to pressure targets to disclose their personal information.

The sophisticated scam attempts to convince users they may face action for missing bill payments, reported consumer watchdog Which. The fake email, complete with BT corporate branding, begins with: “Avoid missing payments” and then follows with: “We wanted to let you know that your direct debit with us is no longer active. This means you don’t currently have an automatic payment method set up to deal with your bills.”

The email includes fake BT contact information, as well as links to the company’s online scam advice, privacy policy and terms and conditions. It is accompanied by a link to divert the customer to a fake website to organise a new direct debit that harvests personal and financial details.

In order to protect yourself against the scam, people are being advised to check the small print of their emails. Which reports the email originates from info44269@internetbillingsystem.com. Strangely, it also requests any outstanding bills are paid to a Vodafone account.
