The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Delhi Police unearthed a scam worth Rs 4.6 crore in which more than 40 people were allegedly cheated in the name of the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) land pooling policy.
Special Commissioner of Police (Crime) Devesh Srivastava said that the arrested accused have been identified as Jatin Gulrajani (39), a property dealer and his aide Raj Kumar (42), who runs a computer repair business. Both the accused have been arrested after cops launched an investigation into the matter.
45 people cheated
Srivastava was quoted by PTI as saying that an amount to the tune of Rs 4.6 crore was received from 45 members in the name of land pooling policy of DDA. The police officer said that an agreement was made by an enterprise on behalf of society for the purchase of land at a price of Rs 4 crore per acre. But, the agreement with the owner of land was made by the middle agency for Rs 2.25 crore per acre.
According to the police, 90 per cent of the amount was transferred to the account of the enterprise. The report revealed that the enterprise received a handsome commission for providing members and arranging land for society. The owner of the enterprise is Raj Kumar, police said.
Srivastava said that the bank accounts of the wife of the accused, the secretary of society and one of the accused persons were found credited with a huge sum of money.
How did the matter come to light?
The fraud came to light when one of the victims lodged a complaint with the police accusing the house society of cheating him of lakhs. According to the complainant, he booked a one-BHK flat for Rs 19.8 lakhs in 2019 and even paid Rs 4.51 lakhs in three installments.
“But, the victim alleged that there was no construction on the ground for which he paid lakhs of money and the whole scheme looked like a fraud,” police told PTI.
Following this, more and more victims approached the EOW and complained against the alleged housing society and police started an investigation. Till now, the EOW has registered 28 cases and 24 people have been arrested in this regard.
