The string of scams targeting Optus customers following data breach

Opportunistic cyber criminals are using the recent Optus data breach to roll out a wide variety of scams, with reports of fake compensation claims, SIM card replacement requests, verification prompts, and general threats to customers.

The 10 million Optus customers who had personal details exposed last month in a major data breach are now being warned of the long list of new scams capitalising on their concerns.

Hundreds of complaints were received by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) in the weeks that followed the breach.

As customers now work to update their compromised information, scammers are posing as the Optus billing department and security department, Medicare, and even as the hackers involved in the initial data breach.

“Scammers are impersonating Optus in various scams. Beware of emails warning of payment errors or threatening email account closures, and callers offering a reward due to the data breach,” ACCC said.

“Scammers are calling people to advise that there has been a suspicious purchase or transaction on their online account.

“They may claim there is a problem because of the Optus data breach.
