It’s Russian roulette when opening emails and links when consumers are unaware of scams that could be posing as something normal. Knowing how to identify scams and frauds can be the difference between being safe and losing money or even identity.
That’s why Corry Jamestown Credit Union is holding a speaker event 11 a.m., at Parkside Corry, Sept. 13.
David Aitken, of the Consumer Issues Task Force for AARP, will be speaking about scams, fraud, awareness and prevention.
This is not the first time CJCU has had a speaker come to educate the community about fraud — Marlo Van Dresar, visa-debit and marketing coordinator at CJCU, said they had someone speak a few years ago. With more people doing transactions online and in-person scams such people recently pretending to be IRS agents at Corry First United Methodist Church, Van Dresar stressed that now is as good a time as any for people to stay informed.
The task force Aitken leads has a mission statement that calls for educating citizens to promote consumer protection. His tagline? “Remember, if you can spot a scam, you can stop a scam,” Aitken said.
Aitken will be discussing a few different scams that may be targeting places like the Corry area, and what to look for to stop a scam.
There will be a lecture portion, a question-and-answer session and informational material…
