The Summit County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a 63-year-old Silver Creek woman was scammed out of $20,000.
A suspect claiming to be a U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent accused the woman of being involved in criminal activity on Aug. 30, according to a report from the Sheriff’s Office. The suspect then coerced the woman to withdraw $20,000 from her bank account.
The woman was ordered to visit several locations in Salt Lake City. The suspect told her to upload the cash to a machine that converted it to Bitcoin. It was then deposited into the suspect’s account.
The woman told deputies she was planning to contact the FBI and Attorney General’s Office. The case was forwarded to investigators.
The Sheriff’s Office responded to several other calls between Monday, Aug. 29 and Sunday, Sept. 4, including reports of vehicle burglary, theft and fraud.
Sunday, Sept. 4
Deputies were dispatched to Canyons Village for an intoxicated man. The 40-year-old Stansbury Park man was disturbing guests and hotel staff. He was located by deputies and determined to be under the influence of alcohol. He was arrested and transported to the Summit County Jail.
Saturday, Sept. 3
Summit County Search and Rescue was contacted about an overdue party in Weber Canyon. A deputy checked the trailhead for the vehicles of those involved. The Sheriff’s Office was later notified the group returned home.
Friday, Sept. 2
Deputies were dispatched to the Pinebrook area for a vehicle theft report. They learned the victim had two vehicles with the keys inside stolen. One of the vehicles, a 2021 GMC Sierra, was equipped with a GPS locator. The GPS indicated the vehicle was at a motel parking lot off State Street in Salt Lake City. Police responded to the location and found the vehicle. A 2009 Ford Edge was also stolen. It hadn’t been located by midweek. Deputies have no suspects.
A driver in Promontory pulled a pistol out of his center console and pointed it at another driver who he thought was driving too slowly. He put the gun away but started motioning with a finger gun as if he was shooting the other driver, the Sheriff’s Office said. The suspect’s vehicle was registered to a company. Deputies attempted to contact the main office and the company’s owner, but they have not responded. The case is ongoing.
Deputies responded to a vehicle burglary in Pinebrook. A man left his keys and wallet in his unlocked car. The wallet was stolen, and the car was moved to another parking spot. The man’s credit card was used at a Kimball Junction business. The suspects then went to a phone store in Salt Lake City. They tried to shut down the man’s phone and access his accounts. Deputies are still collecting evidence.
Thursday, Sept. 1
A Hoytsville man reported his 30-year-old daughter was unresponsive on her bedroom floor. Medical personnel arrived on the scene and pronounced the woman deceased from unknown causes. The death does not appear to be suspicious, but the Office of the Medical Examiner will determine the cause.
A country club employee was captured on video with items stolen from the Kimball Junction business. The items included shirts, hats and golf clubs. Deputies contacted the 23-year-old Park City man who was arrested for theft. He was transported to the Summit County Jail without incident.
A woman was watching her son’s soccer game at Trailside Park when her vehicle was struck by an unknown offender. The suspect caused significant damage to the vehicle’s backside and bike rack. The suspect fled the scene before witnesses could collect identifying information.
Wednesday, Aug. 31
A citizen dispute was reported at the Park City Farmers Market. Five separate witnesses said a 38-year-old Murray man threatened to cause bodily injury to one of the vendors. The victim said the man was “flexing” and acting violently while making threats of harming him. The Murray man was taken into custody after the investigation.
Vehicle burglary was reported in Summit Park. A man said his AirPods, knife, several pairs of shoes and climbing equipment were stolen from his truck between 11 p.m. on Sunday and 6 a.m. on Monday. There are no witnesses and no video surveillance of the incident. Investigators planned to monitor the pawn database for the stolen headphones.
Deputies received a theft call. The Peoa man said several items were stolen from his garage between 7:30 and 10:30 a.m., including 15 hand tools. He was compiling a list of the tools’ descriptions and serial numbers. Deputies planned to follow up.
Tuesday, Aug. 30
Deputies received a call about a theft in the Canyons Village area. The complainant said the victim’s suitcase was found in the hallway of a hotel and relocated to the lobby for safekeeping. The suitcase was removed from the loppy and emptied of its contents between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. before it was put in the hotel dumpster. Staff located the empty suitcase and returned it to the lobby, where it was returned to the victim. The victim estimated the clothing items stolen are valued at around $2,700. Hotel security is reviewing external surveillance for footage of the suitcase being dumped. The case remains open.
Monday, Aug. 29
Several tools were stolen from a Snyderville Basin construction site after suspects broke into the property. The owner was gathering the serial number of the tools to provide to deputies.
A Snyderville Basin woman reported phone fraud. She said she received a call advising her she skipped Jury Duty and needed to make a bail payment. The victim attempted to send $4,200 to the suspect through various money transfer apps, but only $2,231 was transferred. Deputies obtained the suspect’s username and will investigate further.
