No. 1: Upfront payments. While some contractors require a deposit, asking for full payment up front is a big red flag. Make sure you have a contract spelling out what work is to be done, and on what schedule. Obtain a total cost estimate before any work begins.
No. 2: Unlicensed contractors. Whether it’s roof repairs or tree removal, you want to make sure the person doing the work is licensed, insured, and bonded… The bond ensures you’ll get your money back if the job isn’t finished. No. 3: Digital Scams. These can take many forms – including emails or texts that appear to be from a government agency like FEMA. Never click links in unsolicited messages. Remember: any legitimate government website will have a dot-gov address. And never give out personal information like your Social Security number in response to an unsolicited text, call or email.
