Scammers Using New Technique to Phish for Bank Account Information

Scammers are using a new phishing scam to try and obtain consumers’ bank account information. This scam can make it appear as if their messages are coming from a company’s actual customer service line, but it is not. In truth, they are hiding their actual phone number.

With this scam, the scammers will call customers from what appears to be their bank’s phone number. After this call, the bank will send the consumer a fraud alert asking if the person recognizes a charge. Once the person responds “no,” the scammer will call from what looks like the bank’s number and ask for personal and bank account details. If you give them this information, they can access your money.

Never giving out your banking information on an inbound call is crucial. Always call the bank back at the number on the back of your debit or credit card. Do not use any numbers the caller gives you.

Make sure to warn your friends and family about this scam. This warning is vital for any family or friends who may be more vulnerable to these scams. These charlatans can send convincing texts, making it seem like the bank is legitimately attempting to get in touch with you. Also, because they use a recognizable phone number, more people fall victim to the scam.
