Bengaluru: Posing as insurance firm representatives, cybercriminals recently duped two people, including a retired doctor, of over Rs 93 lakh. The cases were reported at southeast CEN crime police station last week which involved a private firm employee along with the retired doctor.

Cyber criminals defraud retired doctor

While the 60-year-old retired doctor from BTM Layout lost Rs 80 lakh to the frauds, the private sector employee was defrauded of over Rs 13 lakh, according to police. The cybercriminals reached out to the former over phone a few months ago, pretending to be insurance firm representatives.

Dr Madhav (name changed), who was to get monthly returns till 2032 on his insurance policy purchased in 2014, was suggested by the crooks that he pre-close his policy and not to wait till 2032 when it was to mature. Believing them to be someone from the insurance firm, the doctor agreed with the miscreants. They asked him to pay some charges for pre-closure, wherein he transferred around Rs 80 lakh in multiple transactions.

The retired doctor realised that he had been cheated only after he approached his friend, a retired assistant commissioner of police, for a Rs 2 lakh hand loan, according to the police as quoted by ToI.
