In light of Utility Scam Awareness this month, PECO is joining utility companies across the United States and Canada to equip customers with essential information to avoid scams and protect their personal and financial security.
Last month, PECO found a 37% increase of reported Utility Scams when compared to October 2021. In fact, there was a 167% increase of reported successful (meaning the customer paid) Utility Scams in October 2022 when compared to October 2021. With the holiday season quickly approaching, which historically yields an increase in scam reports, PECO is reminding customers to always be on the lookout for telltale signs of energy-related scams.
To help keep your readers safe, aware, and scam-free, I’d be happy to connect you with a PECO representative to discuss customer safety and protection as well as the additional tips below to keep customers alert for potential scammers:
• Verify Employee ID: If someone shows up at your house, ask to see their company-issued photo ID through the door/window.
• Beware of Spoofing: Scammers can duplicate the phone system to make it look like PECO is calling, which is spoofing. If you are suspicious of a call or unsure if it is PECO, hang up and call PECO directly at 1-800-494-4000.
• Protect Account Information: Do not provide your PECO account or billing information to anyone. A real PECO representative will have the account information they need.
