The waiting space is crowded. People rustle for hours as they wait for volunteers to help file their 2021 tax returns, including returns for the past four years. One of the clients, Ghadah Abdulazeez, waits for three hours to receive help getting her $1,400 COVID-19 stimulus despite being told there may not be enough time. Luckily, they made it right before closing.
Abdulazeez got help at United Way of King County (UWKC), which offers in-person free tax help throughout the county to those with incomes below $70,000.
For those who missed the April 18 deadline for filing and requested an extension, postseason tax help is now available through July 20. Free online help is available at GetYourRefund or MyFreeTaxes, both services of United Way. For in-person help, the Seattle Public Library (SPL) Central branch and Westfield Southcenter mall free tax-help sites are expected to reopen. However, as of May 12, the details were still being confirmed at SPL Central Library.
“UWKC is offering assistance to taxpayers after the due date for returns,” said William Saulnier, the tax site manager at SPL Central Library. “The details are still being hashed out. Once those are confirmed, we’ll have them up on our website.”
