Merritt RCMP are warning people about an online puppy scam after a local resident was scammed out of $1,600.
This morning, police say they were told about the scam where a Facebook marketplace user posted pictures of French Bulldog Puppies for sale.
Sgt. Josh Roda says a Merritt resident e-transferred the money to the seller and then never heard from them again and never got the puppy they were promised.
“These puppies may look cute, but you won’t actually get them if you send your money to a scammer,” Roda said. “Please double and triple check the validity of the sellers before sending them money.”
Roda is reminding people to be skeptical and watch for things like stock photos and sketchy payment methods. He’s also encouraging people to buy from reputable well-reviewed breeders and ask the seller lots of questions before you pay for anything.
He’s also urging people to never pay for a puppy without actually seeing it – either in person or by video call – and to never rush into a purchase, especially if the seller is encouraging you to.
Tips from Merritt RCMP:
– Be skeptical. Look for stock photos beings used and sketchy payment methods. Paying by credit card through a secure site or Paypal are always the safest option;
– Buy from a reputable breeder. Responsible breeders are happy to share information about puppy parentage and health records and screenings;
