Holiday scam victims devastated after forking out for ‘fake villas’, bogus bookings

“If it’s too good to be true, then it’s a scam,” says an employee at a luxury rental agency.

Scammers have had a field day targeting unsuspecting South Africans looking for holiday accommodation in Cape Town this summer, laughing all the way to the bank while their victims ended up having to abandon their holiday plans.

The victims or potential victims News24 spoke to all responded to adverts on social media – mainly Facebook. It appeared to be legitimate and featured existing rental properties. They believed they found a good deal and had to pay quickly to secure the booking – only to discover that it was a scam and they had lost their hard-earned money.
