The Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office is urging caution when on the internet.
This comes after an elderly Grand Traverse County couple were scammed out of $350,000 this month. After trying to call a false apple support number, they were asked to wire the money through a bitcoin platform called Coinflip.
Because of the lack of documentation in most of these fraud cases, it’s next to impossible to track the money down.
“If it’s an entity that calls and says that ‘we’re with this company or that company or this business’ or whatever that may be, go online and actually Google the number,” Lt. Brandon Brinks, Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office said. “Google the actual business number and call a manager, call an employee at the actual physical business and find out if they are looking for you.”
The sheriff’s office says that even though it is difficult to get the money back, you should act as quickly as possible to report any fraud cases.
