Don’t fall for the latest scam | Business

I’ve been seeing a new type of email phishing over the past few months.

It involves receiving an email telling you that you’ve successfully placed an order, telling you what you’ve purchased and including a prominent paragraph at the bottom thoughtfully explaining that if you did not make this purchase, please call an 800 number to speak to a representative about canceling the order.

Another variation is from a company telling you that your subscription to their service has just renewed and that if you’d like to cancel the subscription, they also provide an 800 number so you can speak to a representative.

I get these all the time. Most of them are caught in the spam filter (I use Gmail), but occasionally they make it to my inbox.

One message I received last week stated my McAfee antivirus protection had been successfully extended another year and that I’d be billed $384.49 and that auto-renewal had been activated. I’ve never been a McAfee customer, and there was no charge to any of my accounts.
