Carton, whose chief qualification to speak about the Mets is his involvement in a $5.6 million Ponzi scheme, has a long history of scoffing at anyone who is not, as he put it in 2005 while lamenting the idea of Asian Americans being allowed to vote in New Jersey, “the average guy in New Jersey, blue-collar white people.” A few years later, he launched a campaign on his show dubbed “La Cucha Gotcha” to have listeners seek out deport Hispanic immigrants they suspected of being in the country illegally. After the inevitable backlash, Carton gathered a group of Hispanic journalists at his studio to “gleefully” tell them to their faces that the campaign was not racist, but was in fact patriotic.
