Cops arrest man over luxury goods scam, buyers cheated of RM20mil

JOHOR BARU: A local man was arrested for his alleged involvement in a luxury goods scam, which led to RM20mil in losses.

Johor police chief Comm Kamarul Zaman Mamat said the suspect had offered luxury watches and limited edition high-end handbags to unsuspecting buyers between August and November this year.

“We have received four reports in relation to the luxury goods scam,” he said in a statement on Friday (Nov 25).

Comm Kamarul said the suspect was detained in a house on Sunday (Nov 20) at 4.45pm in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur and was brought to Johor to assist the investigation.

He said police reports lodged by the victims in Johor Baru and Iskandar Puteri.

Comm Kamarul said the suspect would offer luxury watches and high-end handbags to victims at lower than market prices.

“The suspect would meet victims face-to-face and once they agreed to the price, they would bank in their payments,” he said.

Comm Kamarul said upon receiving the payments, the suspect would disappear with the money without delivering the goods.

He said initial investigations showed the suspect was also involved in similar cases in Perak and the suspect would be handed over to the Perak police.

Comm Kamarul said the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
