CENTRAL Bank chiefs have issued an alert about a firm linked to mortgage scam accused Catriona Carey.

The former Irish hockey star is at the centre of a garda probe into allegations that she conned homeowners out of thousands of euro.

Now the Central Bank has issued a warning notice about a company that has the controversial Kilkenny businesswoman listed among its directors.

The Central Bank said her company, Careysfort Asset Estates Ltd, is not authorised to provide financial services that require an authorisation under legislation it is responsible for enforcing.

The Central Bank added to do so is a criminal offence.

It said: “Consumers should be aware that if they deal with a firm that is not authorised, they will not be eligible for compensation from the Investor Compensation Scheme.”

Carey, 43, is listed as one of three directors of Careysfort Asset Estates Ltd.

Investigators from the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau recently launched an investigation into the businesswoman after RTE accused her of swindling distraught homeowners out of thousands of euro in a mortgage scam.

The trained accountant is reported by RTE Investigates to have preyed on under-pressure families in financial difficulty and at risk of losing their homes as part of the alleged fraud.
