By Rajesh Saha: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has summoned inspector Amalendu Biswas, circle inspector of Kanthi police station in East Midnapore, to appear at its office in Kolkata’s Nizam Palace for his alleged involvement in the Kanthi burning ghat scam.
On January 4, the Calcutta High Court directed the CBI to investigate the alleged corruption in the tender process for the reformation of a crematorium in Kanthi district, after which the central probe agency registered an FIR against the accused on Friday. Prima facie, it appeared that Biswas had been allegedly involved in the case, said a CBI source, adding that Biswas has been asked to appear before CBI’S Anti-Corruption Branch office in Kolkata in person for interrogation.
Meanwhile, the East Midnapore Police arrested a civil contractor — identified as Ramchandra — from Kanthi district in Purba Midnapore for his alleged involvement in the corruption case, linked to the construction of a proposed crematorium. An FIR was registered against Ramchandra based on a complaint filed by Kakali Panda, president of Darua Friends Cooperative Society.

Ramchandra later approached the Calcutta High Court, seeking a bail. He also alleged that the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) party had “pressured Panda to make false allegations against him”. Confirming Ramchandra’s claims, Panda told the Calcutta High Court that “someone had forced her to sign a paper related to the case” on December 4 and also forcibly took her to the police station to file a complaint against the accused.
Following the hearing, the high court ordered a CBI investigation into the case immediately.
Based on the Calcutta High Court’s order, the CBI summoned Biswas to interrogate him in the case thoroughly, said officials.
