Beware of vacation scams this summer | Wake Up Wisconsin

WISCONSIN (WAOW) — As summer continues, you might have a vacation or two left to enjoy, but scammers are also hoping to enjoy your vacation by stealing your credit card information.

One well-known hotel scam is that people will receive a phone call in the middle of the night from a scammer claiming to be the front desk.

The scammers will say there was a problem with processing payment and ask to confirm your credit card over the phone.

Susan Bach, Northeast Wisconsin Regional Director with the Better Business Bureau, said the scammers are trying to catch you off guard before you have had a chance to think about it, and steal your credit card info, so be careful of that.

Also be careful of sites claiming free Wi-Fi.

Get the official hotel’s Wi-Fi and password.

“So that you know its a secure site, it’s not someone you know with a hot spot out in the parking lot setting up a Wi-Fi connection so that they can steal personal information from you,” said Bach.

If you think you have given over your credit card information to a scammer, reach out to your credit card company as soon as possible to disable your card and dispute those charges.

Bach said if you’re going off the beaten path to find a vacation rental, scammers might steal pictures of legitimate homes for sale.

While it is a legitimate home, it is not actually available for rent, so be careful.
