Bengal Hiring Scam News Live Updates: ED attaches over Rs 46 crore in assets of ex-Minister Partha Chatterjee and aide

The Enforcement Directorate on Monday said it has attached assets worth Rs 46.22 crore “beneficially owned” by former minister Partha Chatterjee and his alleged associate Arpita Mukherjee as part of a money laundering probe into the West Bengal teachers’ recruitment ‘scam’.

The federal agency also filed its first charge sheet in the case before a special court in Kolkata in which it named the duo and six companies as accused.

The attached properties include 40 immovable assets such as a farmhouse, flats and “prime land” located in Kolkata worth a total of Rs 40.33 crore, apart from Rs 7.89 crore worth deposits kept in 35 bank accounts, the federal agency said in a statement.

“The attached properties are found to be beneficially owned by Partha Chatterjee and Arpita Mukherjee,” it said.
Singh had floated the PLC last year after quitting the Congress following his unceremonious exit as chief minister. The PLC contested the elections in alliance with the BJP and the Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa-led Shiromani Akali Dal (Sanyuk).

The former Punjab chief minister recently returned from London following a spinal surgery, and met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

After his meeting with Shah on September 12, Singh said he held a very productive discussion on various issues related to national security, rising cases of narco-terrorism in Punjab and the future roadmap for the state’s overall holistic development.

Two of the five accused arrested in Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sonali Phogat’s murder case were granted bail by a special court in Goa on Monday. Ramachandra Mandrekar and Dattaprasad Gaonkar, who are accused of peddling drugs, were granted bail by the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS) court in Mapusa town. Earlier, the same court had granted bail to Edwin Nunes, owner of the Curlies Restaurant where Phogat had partied hours before her death. Phogat (43) was brought dead to a private hospital in Anjuna on August 23.

US aircraft carrier to visit S. Korea amid N. Korean threats

A U.S. aircraft carrier is to visit South Korea this week for its first joint training with South Korean warships in five years, officials said Monday, in an apparent show of force against increasing North Korean nuclear threats. The USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier and its battle group will arrive at a southeastern South Korean naval base on Friday for a combined training meant to boost the allies’ military readiness and to show “the firm resolve by the Korea-U.S. alliance for the sake of peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula,” the South Korean navy said in a statement.
It would be the first such joint drills involving a U.S. aircraft carrier near the peninsula since 2017, when the U.S. sent three aircraft carriers including the Reagan for naval drills with South Korea in response to North Korean nuclear and missile tests, according to the South Korean Defense Ministry.
