BDO warns against online bank account scam

The public should beware of scammers offering to help open online bank accounts to avail of prizes or upgraded services, BDO Unibank warned on Monday.

Fraudsters are calling clients to say that they had won prizes or rewards that can be redeemed via an online account, the bank said in a statement.

The would-be victim is then asked facilitate activation via a provided code, which instead allows the scammer access to the BDO client’s bank account.

Higher daily transfer limits, stronger account security or other enticements are among the offers being made by scammers, the bank said.

“They will trick you into allowing a third-party account to be enrolled to your online banking account through ATM (automated teller machine) activation,” it added.

“Don’t instantly fall for promising rewards or other enticements that will lead you to share your account details … BDO will never ask you to activate your online banking account via ATM to claim rewards or upgrade your account/ATM,” the bank continued.

“Also, do not let others assist you in opening an online banking account or activate it via ATM.”

It explained that ATM activation “is required only when account holders initiate the online banking or third-party account enrollment themselves”.
