Almost 47,000 students’ details stolen after scammer hacks Victorian university’s system

A major cyber attack at a Victorian university has led to the contact details of almost 47,000 current and past students being stolen, as well as some students’ results.

Deakin University was hit with attack on Sunday, when someone hacked a staff member’s username and password to access the university’s information, which is held by a third-party provider.

The hacker then used the information to send a scam text from Deakin to 9997 students.

Anyone who clicked on the link was taken to a form which asked for the recipient’s, information including credit card details.

The hacker also downloaded the contact details of 46,980 current and past Deakin students.

The contact details included student name, student ID, student mobile number, Deakin email address and special comments, which included recent unit results.

Deakin University has advised it took “immediate action” to stop the hacker sending any further texts to students.

“An investigation into the data breach was immediately commenced,” the university has advised in a statement, in which it has vowed to work to prevent future cyber attacks

“Deakin sincerely apologises to those impacted by this incident and wants to assure the Deakin community that it is conducting a thorough investigation to prevent a similar incident from occurring again.”
