The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has approved a charge sheet against Mahbubul Haque Chisty, former chairman of Farmers Bank Limited’s audit committee, and his five associates for amassing illegal wealth of around Tk69.58 crore.
The commission approved the charge sheet at its regular meeting on Tuesday, said ACC Secretary Mahabub Hossain.
The other five accused are– Hazrat Ali, managing director of Messrs Rosberg Auto Rice Mills Ltd, Delwar Hossain, director of Rosberg in Uttam Barua, AKMM Shamim, head of Sherpur Branch of the bank, and Khairul Alam, managing director of City Survey Ltd.
According to the case, the accused misappropriated Tk69.58 crore as loans without heeding banking rules and regulations by misusing power.
Later, they transferred the amount for the purpose of concealment.
The accused have been charged under sections 406, 409, and 109 of the Penal Code and section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947, under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
On December 19, 2017, Bangladesh Bank (BB) removed the managing director of Farmers Bank on charges of helping the bank’s board of directors engage in loan disbursement irregularities.
Following the scandal, the bank was renamed Padma Bank in February 2019 to recover its image tarnished by irregularities and loan scams.
