Letter: Thomas the choice

I’d like to thank Connecticut Public Television for hosting the debate between the Democratic and Republican secretary of the state candidates on Tuesday, Oct. 18. This hourlong debate really showed us who the candidates are and how prepared they are to assume the role of SOTS if they are elected in November.

It was quite apparent that Stephanie Thomas has the knowledge, experience and demeanor to be Connecticut’s next SOTS. She understands what the position entails, has a keen understanding of the issues, and has experience solving complex problems in government and in the private sector.

On the other hand, it appears that Dominic Rapini is unprepared and, arguably, unfit for the job or any elected position, for that matter. On the question of ranked-choice voting, Rapini did not seem to grasp how it actually works, calling it a “Ponzi scheme.” As for this year’s ballot measure regarding early voting in the state, Rapini opposes it for reasons that reveal he does not understand how laws are crafted and passed. Finally, the most damning and disqualifying things that were revealed by Thomas about Rapini were his involvement as chairman of an organization that filed dozens of frivolous voter fraud claims and his social media posts supporting the insurrectionists who stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6th, 2021.
