Scammers are always working to find a new way to dupe the public and consumer goods is no exception, according to the FBI.
“Scammers are leveraging the vulnerabilities in the global supply chain, as well as the public’s continuing need for new batteries to sell a wide variety of counterfeits or unauthorized replicas online,” a recent joint press release by the FBI and the Intellectual Property Rights Center reads. “Do not fall victim to online fraudsters or unauthorized dealers or manufacturers.”
According to the release, counterfeit batteries aren’t subjected to the same testing as OEM batteries, and forgoing the testing can result in adverse impacts on the health and safety of consumers.
Reputable companies will recommend compatible battery sizes and types depending on the device. Products using original equipment manufacturers have been subjected to multiple tests to determine the proper battery types. Using the wrong battery type can result in overheating — which may cause fires or explosions that could result in injury or property damage. It can also cause poor performance, device damage or complete failure.
