Former YSR Congress MP Kothapalli Geetha gets 5-yr jail in Rs 42 crore scam

Hyderabad: Former YSR Congress MP Kothapalli Geetha has been sentenced to five years in jail for defrauding the Punjab National Bank (PNB) of Rs 42.79 crore. A CBI special court in Hyderabad also gave her husband P Ramakoteshwara Rao, managing director of Vishweswara Infrastructure Private Ltd, five years jail time.

Along with them, bank official KK Aravindakshan and S Raj Kumar, the fifth accused, were also convicted and sentenced to five years in jail. Aravindakshan was the general manager at PNB’s head office in Hyderabad. He and then assistant GM BK Jayaprakasam secretly conspired with the accused, according to the CBI alleged.

The latter passed away during the trial and hence no charges were filed against him.

The CBI filed a chargesheet against Geetha, a former deputy collector involved in her husband’s construction business, on February 17, 2021. She was found guilty of cheating, criminal conspiracy and forgery.

On Wednesday, Geetha and her husband were moved to Chanchalguda jail along with the convicted bank official by the CBI. Along with the jail term, all three have been fined Rs 25,000 each, while Vishweshwara Infrastructure was ordered to pay Rs 1 lakh.

Meanwhile, the CBI had filed the first chargesheet in 2015, in which it alleged that the accused misrepresented facts to PNB and took a short-term loan of Rs 25 crore in 2009 to develop a 53-acre township in Raidurgam. The loan was diverted which resulted in a loss of Rs 42.7 crore to the bank.
