Ben Fordham has revealed he wound up a scammer by offering a romantic road trip in the Australian outback with his own elaborate fake story – all while his real wife was in on the joke.
Fordham told his 2GB listeners someone identifying themselves as ‘Tina’, using a photo of a young woman, contacted him on WhatsApp, asking for a tour guide.
The broadcaster strung along the scammer by pretending to be a grizzled tour guide who had struck it rich at the races and survived a mauling by a kangaroo, before ghosting her.

The scammer immediately gave themselves away by apologising for contacting the wrong person and tried to probe Fordham for his real identity.
Scammers have been targeting WhatsApp all year, firstly pretending to be the recipient’s child.
The scam Fordham faced follows a familiar pattern where an unknown person uses a weak excuse to claim they’ve come across the recipient by chance.
