QUEZON CITY, (PIA) – The Bureau of Immigration (BI) warned the public against scammers who are posing as government officials to lure victims into handing over their money.
In a statement on Friday, Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente said they received reports of individuals pretending to be the BI chief, as well as other government officials, in soliciting money from unsuspecting victims.
“This is a scam, attempting to use the name of government employees in their illegal activities,” Morante said.
Morante explained, under his name, the scammer will send an email to a victim seeking his/her assistance in sending a money abroad for a distressed friend.
The scammer would pretend to have difficulty in sending money, and would seek the assistance of his victim in wiring money in his behalf.
“The public are warned against this new modus,” Morante emphasized.
The BI urged the public to avoid transacting or dealing with scammers and immediately report any illegal activities to the authorities.
Morante warned the unscrupulous individuals to stop this online modus since any attempts will be coordinated with the cybercrime authorities for investigation. (JAFD/PIA-IDPD)
