EUGENE, Ore. – The Lane County Sheriff’s Office is issuing a warning about a phone scam in the community.
They said they’ve received reports about scammers identifying themselves as employees of the sheriff’s office, either over the phone, by text or by email.
The scammers are using the names of real employees and provide a fraudulent callback number. According to officials, when the victim calls that number, they are directed into a fake phone tree system. That’s when the scammers will make claims that there are warrants or unsettled legal business and ask for personal or financial information.
As part of their warning, the sheriff’s office reminds the public they will never ask for money, awards or compensation of any type over the phone. If you receive one of these calls, they ask that you reach out to authorities.
