New Delhi: In a shocking incident reported from the national capital, a professor of a private university was duped of Rs 17 lakh on pretext of offering refund for flight ticket cancellation.
The victim, a woman professor at a university in Dwarka, lives in Rohini with her family. The incident of fraud took place on December 4. No arrest has been made in the case so far.
In her complaint to police, the professor stated that she got a call from a person impersonating as a customer care executive of an airline and informed her that her son’s flight has been cancelled. The cheat told the professor to follow some steps if she wanted to get the refund for ticket cancellation, according to a report in Times of India.
The victim followed the instructions from the cheat and downloaded a remote access app which granted cheats access to professor’s mobile. A police officer said that a similar app was already installed on her phone.
According to police, the professor had installed the app to teach students online and that cheats may have got access to the app and defrauded her.
Initially, an amount of Rs 6.2 lakh was deducted account. The professor immediately contacted National Cyber Crime cell helpline 1930. The next day, another transaction totalling Rs 10 lakh was found by the professor.
