Thrissur: A past episode related to Karuvannur Co-operative bank scam has surfaced now. According to reports the accused and individuals who remained mute spectators to the fraud had spent Rs 50,000 for some rituals related to astrological beliefs. The rituals were performed for bringing fortune on the 30-cent plot brought for the construction of the bank’s centenary building.
According to reports, the individuals who were part of the alleged malpractices at the bank spent around Rs 50,000 to ‘ward off evil spirits and unfavourable forces’ from the plot.
Earlier, 2 cent land was given to a nearby religious centre on an astrologer’s advice as a solution to fix the issues with the land. Poojas too were conducted. All these activities were kept under the rug.
The bank had requested Rs 3 crore for the construction of the centenary building while the state co-operative bank citing its Rs 500 investment bracket allocated Rs 6 crore. The land was purchased at a cheaper rate and those involved allegedly swindled Rs 20 lakh by inflating the land value in the documents. The bank officials approached the astrologer after rumours claimed that the land has some evil presence.
Meanwhile, the construction of the building remains stalled and concrete pillars erected for the same have been deteriorating as the scam put the bank in a financial crisis. Karuvannur bank had spent Rs 13.5 crore spent for the construction including the erection of pillars.
