The Malta Police Force is warning the public to be careful as a new wave of scam texts purporting to be from MaltaPost appears to have emerged, leading to a number of victims coming forward.
The force said that it was receiving an average of 13 reports daily on the scam, and that individual victims were being defrauded out of hundreds of euros apiece.
The messages ask recipients to pay a far more modest amount to settle customs fees for a package that they might be expecting – the proximity of Christmas makes this a more likely than usual – and include a link.
The link goes to a website that fraudulently impersonates Maltapost and asks for credit card details which enables the fraudsters to claim far larger amounts from the victims’ bank accounts.
“Our appeal is that these messages are ignored and immediately deleted,” the police said.
