Senior scams
Now I am mad! I just read another article on a senior who got scammed out of $800,000. I have older parents and older in-laws. Both sets know — never give money to anyone, period.
Someone calls you for money you hang up. If they leave you a message, I’ll call them back, and I’ll give them a piece of my mind.
I am aware some seniors are alone and can’t call anyone, which is a shame. There are scammers all over the place. There has to be more done and more awareness done to prevent this. This should be front page news. This should be a priority for the police and making people aware of what to do. I never hear the police say, “just hang up” or “don’t give anyone your money.” Common sense people. It’s simple when someone on the phone pretends to be your grandchild, you hang up and call your grandchild to see if it’s true.
Flawed on sewers
The City of Hamilton’s management of its old sewer system seems fundamentally flawed.
Ontario Minister of the Environment David Piccini pointed out that other cities and communities with aging infrastructure don’t have spills which begs the question why is it happening in Hamilton.
Thank goodness Ontario’s Environment minister will order an audit of the entire system with news of the 26-year Burlington Street sewage spill into Hamilton Harbour.
Why was there no audit as a result of Sewergate — a 24-billion litre, four-year sewage leak into Chedoke Creek in 2018?
Let’s hope all staff involved including the new mayor and city council will ensure the necessary investment and effort is made to remediate the harbour and prevent anything of the magnitude of these two occurrences from happening again.
Trump’s followers
Watching “The Fifth Estate,” I got more and more agitated at the appalling followers of Donald Trump. How can they be so stupid and continue to be conned by this incredibly, desperate, despot? It’s unbelievable to me that this immoral reprobate isn’t behind bars for the crimes he has been accused of committing. What the heck is wrong with Americans and their justice system? Conspiracy! Insurrection! Fraud! Election interference! Sexual assault! Misconduct! And so much more. Why isn’t he behind bars?
High-tech med
My dear wife was diagnosed with an aggressive lung cancer Aug 24. Of course, this was very disturbing news and I presumed a death sentence was a possibility.
The course of action was determined with the usual cancer work up … CT scan, PET scan and pulmonary work up. Meetings with anesthesia and surgical staff took place, as my wife had a couple of co-morbidities, Addison’s disease and Type 1 diabetes.
Thoracic surgery was booked for Oct. 25 to remove half of the right lung and biopsy numerous lymph nodes. This was done with MIS (minimally invasive surgery) techniques and the Di Vinci robot. Three small incisions on her right side as well as a drain incision. She was in hospital for two days and then discharged. Incredible!
Pathology showed tumour margins were clear, and lymph tissue was negative … no chemo or radiation needed.
The staff involved with her care were the best and a big thank you to all of the health workers. This technology is available in Hamilton at St. Joe’s hospital and this fabulous surgeon is Dr. Hanna.
Bumpy on Barton
I have lived in Hamilton for 10 years and I feel in that time that Barton Street from Parkdale to the Linc has been under constant construction and, yet, no part of that section of road has improved. You almost need a dune buggy to navigate the various bumps and holes. How long does it take to repair less than 500 metres of road? The city really needs to ask itself that question.
Freedom to help
I hope the author of ‘No more masks’ (Nov. 24) will continue to be depressed, because she is seeing the use of masks. I will continue to wear a mask. What she does not see is those of us who have not been ill with COVID-19 or even the flu because of wearing the mask since 2019. To me the mask is a symbol of unselfishness and a symbol of prevention. The freedom to help myself and others not get sick!
Education workers
To writer who asked how much can we afford to pay education workers: Do you make more than $39,000 a year and get raises in excess of one per cent annually? Maybe the question is how much can we afford to pay the MPPs to ignore the municipalities and pave over the Greenbelt and build highways we don’t need. They all got more than one per cent.
