Tips to fight against scam calls

Authorities have a hard time stopping them, so here’s how you can

LA GRANGE, Texas – Fayette County Sheriff’s Office offer tips to the community about protection from scam calls.

Here are the tips for protection against the calls:
1. Do not answer unrecognized numbers. Check voicemails to find out the caller’s identity. Also, the scammers register answered calls, so they know the calls work on your device.

2. Do not give out personal information over the phone if you do not know who the caller is for certain.

3. Call agencies like the IRS or Medicare directly if you receive a call from the agencies.

4. Payments for gift cards, prepaid cards or wire transfers over the phone are often used by scammers because authorities struggle to trace these methods.

5. Use a call-blocking mobile app to screen calls, or ask phone service providers about any blocking tools.

Many scammers portray themselves as Medicare, the IRS or other agencies. They generate fake telephone numbers or use someone else’s number. Also, they ask for personal information, wire money, offer gift cards and ask for card numbers.

These people operate outside of the country. Consequently, local authorities can only do little to stop the scammers.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office provided the above information.
