For Giving Tuesday, the Ronald McDonald House Houston is featuring its JoyFULL Eats program, which provides hot meals to families at its locations.
H-E-B, which partners in the initiative, will match donations dollar for dollar up to $50,000. Lisa Estes, the nonprofit’s chief advancement officer, said that $25,000 has been raised so far. “We are using Giving Tuesday to help us finish that challenge,” she said.
Created in 2012, Giving Tuesday has become a global movement to encourage generosity, focusing attention back on charity after Black Friday and Cyper Monday shopping.
Many of Houston’s 27,000 nonprofits are participating. And they are getting creative with their fundraising.
Earlier this month, 60 United Way supporters rappelled down the side of the 26-story DoubleTree Hotel Galleria for the organization’s “Rappel for a Reason” event. Each participant had to raise at least $1,500 to guarantee a rappel spot. Their efforts raised over $120,000 for United Way of Greater Houston.
Ronald McDonald House Houston joined the Giving Tuesday rally early on. “We jumped in,” she said. “Over the years, it’s developed.”
In the beginning, online giving was still new. Tools have developed greatly since then. “Every year we’ve been more sophisticated,” Estes said.
