DeKalb County Sheriff Nick Welden warns of a scam going around targeting the elderly.
DEKALB COUNTY, Ala. — DeKalb County law enforcement is warning residents of a scam targeting the elderly through Facebook, Facebook Messenger, or email. The Sheriff’s Office says that the scammers send a message, through one or more of these services, that appear to be from a friend.
According to Sheriff Welden:
What the scammers do is send a message thru Facebook, Facebook messenger or e-mail, but it will appear to be from one of your friends. The friend’s accounts have been hacked and the victims receive messages that they have won money, but have to pay the taxes on the winning amount. We have multiple victims send payment for alleged taxes to fraudulent overseas accounts. Please talk to your family members and make them aware that this is a scam and any taxes owed would be paid directly to the I.R.S.
