93-year-old woman nearly wires away $200,000 in scam: Mayfield Police Blotter

MAYFIELD, Ohio

Fraud: Echo Drive

A 93-year-old resident reported Oct. 15 that she was nearly the victim of a scam after responding to a fake antivirus pop-up message on her computer.

She said she called a given number and was told she would be arrested and lose access to her computer is she did not pay $200,000.

She went to her bank to wire the money, but the staff immediately flagged the transaction and is investigating.

Theft: Wilson Mills Road

A student at the high school had a pair of Air Pods stolen off his desk Oct. 11.

His family later tracked them to a home of another student. That 15-year-old student admitted the following day that he had stolen them.

The Air Pods, valued at $180, were returned and the school handled the discipline with the student involved with no criminal charges filed.

Disturbance: Wilson Mills Road

A woman reported from the high school Oct. 12 that she was picking up her daughter but the girl, 14, was refusing to leave and another student was peering into her car window and swearing at her.

Responding officers learned the girl did not like the way her mother had disciplined her. The girl’s therapist, school counselor and the family met inside the school and were able to help adjust the situation.

Fraud: Beech Hill Drive

A woman, 21, reported Oct. 12 that someone tried to fraudulently obtain a loan in her name.

It was learned that her mother’s account with the same investment company had been hacked and how her personal information was obtained.
