A 48-year-old software engineer from Thane city in Maharashtra has allegedly lost 6.33 lakh in an online dating scam, police said on Sunday.
On May 24 this year, the man received a message on his cell phone from a number offering online dating.

When he called the number, the person on the other end identified himself as Deepak and asked him to pay Rs 38,200 to have his online profile created.
Later, on several occasions, the accused allegedly made the victim pay a total of Rs 6,33,626 under some pretext, an official at Chitalsar Police Station said, citing the man’s complaint.

When the defendant received no response to his calls after paying the money, he lodged a complaint with the police.
Based on the complaint, police on Friday registered a case against the accused under the provisions of India’s Penal Code and Information Technology Act, the official said, adding that no arrests had been made so far.
Police are conducting an investigation into the case, he said.
