Scam warning: Britons warned of ‘crucial point’ in energy scam as woman hands over details | Personal Finance | Finance

Energy bills are a big concern right now for so many people, criminals are exploiting those most vulnerable to make some extra cash. On BBC MoneyBox, reporter Dan Whitworth explained how one lady handed over her credit card details to scammers.

With an increasing amount of people getting caught in the scam, he also suggested his great advice to avoid falling into the trap.

Energy prices rose for millions of households on October 1 but with Government support, there is a limit placed on the cost per unit.

The Government stepped in after an 80 percent increase in domestic gas and electricity bills was earmarked for the first half of winter.

A typical annual bill has gone up from £1,971 to £2,500 but will be further mitigated by cost-of-living payments.

As well as the Energy Price Cap guarantee, each household will get £400 off their energy bills.

The discount will be applied over six months, with a reduction of £66 in October and November, and £67 every month between December and March 2023.

As there are various payments due to help people get through this winter, criminals are using this time to target the most vulnerable.

Mr Whitworth said: “The crucial point is that help is automatic, people don’t need to do anything to get it.
