JACKSON COUNTY, Mississippi — The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is warning local residents about a tax scam making the rounds across the U.S.
Residents are receiving letters purportedly from the “Tax Processing Unit” for Jackson County. The first problem: there’s no such department. Second, the official looking logo to the left side of the envelope is not the Jackson County logo nor the logo for the sheriff’s office.
Inside the envelope is a letter with the header “Distraint Warrant” and informing the recipient of an unpaid tax debt. Distraint warrants are a legally enforceable means of ensuring future payment from delinquent taxpayers. To ensure back taxes are paid, the state can issue a warrant to protect the property owner’s assets for future liquidation.
The letter goes on to state the recipient has 15 days to pay in full and/or call an 800 number “to avoid action.”
It’s all fraudulent, of course, a bogus letter from a fictitious agency. Residents are advised to simply throw the letter away and/or report it to the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office.
