Linkt text scam: Mum’s warning after losing thousands in one message

Bondi mum Diana Nikitenko is the “last person who would be scammed”.

The accountant never answers unknown numbers before checking online for scam reports and she always double checks her transactions.

But a trip up with a text message pretending to be toll road operator Linkt has left her $3000 out of pocket to scammers and now she wants others to be aware.

Nikitenko received a text message on Wednesday saying she had a failed payment for a toll charge and requested that she settle the outstanding balance.

“If it was any other company I wouldn’t have been a victim, but I used Linkt only 10 days before to update my details so I thought maybe something was wrong with my account,” she told 7NEWS.com.au.

“I googled this number before I made the payment and there was no scam alert so it was making sense to me.”

So, she clicked the link and entered her details on what appeared to be a legitimate page.

“I saw (the Linkt site) only 10 days ago so it didn’t trigger any flags.”

A day later, her account was missing $3000 spent on Sephora purchases.

“Even when I called the bank saying I didn’t make the transaction to Sephora I didn’t link the two together,” she said.
