Live streaming scam dupes footy fans eager to watch regional finals matches online

Wimmera footy fans are being warned not to click on social media links inviting them to watch live streamed matches ahead of finals this weekend to avoid being scammed or hacked.

The Wimmera Football Netball League received reports of at least one club losing administrator access to their Facebook account after they clicked on a link attached to an event invitation advertising a live stream.

“The events being created on Facebook look very legit because it has the AFL logo on the top and has the two exact teams playing in the matches … so they’re picking up all of the information off our Facebook pages,” Jenny French, operations manager at AFL Wimmera-Mallee, said.

The Horsham District Football Netball League held their grand final on the weekend.

Ms French told of how a fake event claiming it would stream the A-grade match was created and she believed some people fell victim.

“People from outside our region [clicked on the link], obviously knowing it was going to be a great spectacle to watch, and I believe some people did enter credit card details [hoping] to watch it,” she said.
