GLEN ROCK, NJ — In the past week, were reported out of Glen Rock. The following information was summarized from records of the Glen Rock Police Department.
Aug. 17: A Glen Rock resident reported falling victim to a gift card scam. The resident received an email from a Gmail account claiming to be a PayPal customer service; the email concerned an alleged fraudulent transaction and provided a customer service number to contact. Upon contacting the number, the victim was persuaded by the purported operator to provide bank information and allow remote access to their computer. The operator claimed a refund in excess of the amount due had mistakenly occurred, and that the resident would need to purchase gift cards to return the overpayment. The victim then purchased $2,000 worth in gift cards and provided the card numbers to the operator. When the operator continued to request further action, the victim grew suspicious and hung up the phone. The detective bureau is reviewing the matter, Police Chief Dean Ackermann said.
Aug. 19: A Glen Rock resident reported a fraudulent charge on their credit card for the purchase of an Apple Mac mini, and learned that the item was shipped to an Irvington address. Apple and the credit card company were notified, and opened a fraud complaint. The detective bureau is reviewing the matter, Ackermann said.
