Police warn of phone app scam

After a local resident was scammed out of more than $100,000, Eyre Western Police urge the community to be vigilant to scammers trying to infiltrate your computers and accounts.

On Friday 19 August, the resident fell victim to a scammer after being contacted with an Amazon phone scam.  The scammer subsequently accessed the victim’s accounts and transferred a significant sum out of their account in a series of transactions.

The matter was immediately reported and is being investigated.

The community are urged to be aware of the various methods scammers use to access your computers and bank accounts.

Many are familiar with scammers cold calling and asking for your personal details, or by suggesting you have a virus on your computer and ask for your passwords to remotely log in.

Recently there has been an Amazon scam where callers suggest you are entitled to a refund and ask you to download an app that then allows access to your accounts.  DO NOT provide your details to these types of callers or download the app.

See the following tips to stay safe and prevent vital information being provided and the loss of your hard-earned money:

  • Always update your passwords to ensure they are protected
  • Always know who you are communicating with and where your information is going. If you are uncertain, confirm the contact is legitimate through methods other than what they have provided
