Scammers Target Cold Spring | KNSI

(KNSI) – Customers of at least one Cold Spring area bank have been inundated with fraud attempts.

Police Chief Jason Blum says it is a complex scam, beginning with a phone call that is spoofed to look like it is coming from Granite Bank.

“They’ll then send you an email link to reset your password because there was a fraudulent charge on your credit card or debit card or whatever the case may be. And then once you click on that link, and if you enter information, they’re able to get into your account.”

Blum says you can know if it is a scam by the amount of pressure they use to get you to act immediately.

“The biggest thing is, it’s very urgent, you have to do this now, we have to keep you on the phone, and they try to push you so you don’t have time to think about what’s happening and what information you’re giving.”

Blum made the remarks at Tuesday’s city council meeting. Blum says the branch has been fielding a call every five to 10 minutes some days from people who have heard from the scammers. Blum says customers of any local business could be potentially chosen as the target of the spoofers. He says to be vigilant, now and in the future.
