The High Court on Tuesday observed that the biggest crimes were taking place in the banking sector and such crimes crippled the country.
The bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Khizir Hayat made the remark during the hearing of anticipatory bail prayers for four bankers.
The court said that big financial crimes in the banking sector were crippling the country.
‘How will the country go forward if it [such crimes] continues?’ the court posed the question to the lawyers present during the hearing.
The Anti-Corruption Commission on March 20, 2021 filed a case with its Rajshahi office against five officers of Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited and a businessman for their involvement in embezzling Tk 2.30 lakh from the bank.
The accused are IBBL Shibganj branch manager Afzal Hossain, his four colleagues Fayezur Rahman, Abu Bakar, Moniruzzaman Khan and Monowara Khatun and Nur Alam, proprietor of Nur Electronics.
Fayezur Rahman did not pray for bail.
The High Court gave Afzal, Abu Bakar, Monir and Monowara four weeks to surrender to the Rajshahi Metropolitan Senior Special Court for bail.
The court warned the four bankers that it used to send accused in financial crimes to jail but they were given time to surrender as the amount embezzled was ‘small’.
